Antiquia found pleasure in her morning strolls with Morrigan. Today, as was often the case, they were headed along the path that led to the Orchard of Enlightenment. This was another of her favorite places on this level. It was Morrigan’s too. Antiquia doubted that she would ever grow tired of the sweet smell of blossoms and fruit. She plucked the juiciest of the apricots, spread a blanket, and sat down. Morrigan selected a handful of cherries and joined her.

“If we wait,” Morrigan said, “we risk Jahi regaining enough of his power that we’ll not be able to contain him again.” Evil spirits were known to feed off of intense emotions—fear—anxiety—anger—and as it was, Jahi had a ready supply.

Antiquia lowered the apricot from her mouth. She had been anticipating the sweetness of her first bite. “Ye of little faith.” She held her enforcer’s gaze.

Morrigan bowed.

Antiquia took a bite, chewed, and swallowed. “You are correct though, it is close to the time that we’ll need to take steps to put him back where he belongs.” It was always a balancing act, to intervene or to allow free will to play out, “He came so close to taking her soul.”

Morrigan nodded, “He wanted her because of her potential to be a powerful force for good.”

“Or evil,” Antiquia added. “Had he consumed her…” She shuddered at the thought. “I don’t even want to consider what may have resulted.” She took a bite of apricot. “Instead, we shall just rejoice in Evelyn’s resourcefulness.”

“Indeed,” Morrigan said as she popped a cherry into her mouth, “Evelyn managed to tag-team through the levels so that she could intervene on behalf of her mortal love.”

“And by doing so,” Antiquia said with a tender smile, “she accomplished our objective as well.” Antiquia reached for one of Morrigan’s cherries, “Gabriel now has something, or rather someone, to live for.”
